Saints Rally Past Ravens 24-17 Behind Late-Game Drives.

BALTIMORE — Tyler Shough and the New Orleans Saints delivered two late scoring drives Sunday, overcoming a second-half deficit to defeat the Baltimore Ravens 24-17. Shough scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 1:28 remaining. The touchdown came one play after officials ruled that Shough had been stopped short of the goal line on third down. New Orleans chose to run another play on fourth down rather than settle for a field goal, and the ruling that Shough crossed the goal line stood following a replay review. “It’s a hard play on the goal line because ... sometimes they lose sight of the football. I think it’s a challenging play for everyone,” Saints coach Kellen Moore said. “Fortunate for us to get that. Obviously we're going to go for it in that situation. Chance to score a touchdown. If not, we're forcing them to be on the minus-1 and go the long way.”

The Saints took possession at their own 32 with 8:06 left after Baltimore's offense went three-and-out. New Orleans put together a long, controlled drive, converting two third downs and two fourth downs before taking the lead. Earlier in the fourth quarter, Shough connected with Chris Olave on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 9:42 remaining. A Baltimore penalty moved the Saints' two-point attempt to the 1-yard line, where Travis Etienne Jr. ran for the conversion to tie the game at 17. The Ravens had a chance to answer but again failed to gain a first down. On third-and-1, Lamar Jackson went deep toward Chris Moore, but Kool-Aid McKinstry broke up the pass. “A play that we liked, thought we had a shot there for an explosive,” Ravens coach Jesse Minter said. “Obviously, didn’t work out, so it’s always going to be, you know, looking at it after the fact.” Baltimore received one final opportunity after Shough's touchdown. The Ravens reached the New Orleans 37, but Jackson's deep pass was intercepted by Julian Blackmon with 13 seconds remaining. Baltimore had controlled much of the game before the fourth-quarter collapse. The Ravens led 17-9 after Tyler Loop made a 49-yard field goal early in the second half. Derrick Henry opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. After New Orleans settled for a field goal on fourth-and-3 from the Baltimore 5, the Ravens drove 80 yards and extended their advantage to 14-3 on Jackson's 22-yard touchdown pass to Rashod Bateman with 24 seconds left in the first half.

Barion Brown's 53-yard kickoff return helped the Saints set up another field goal before halftime. Daniel Carlson then connected from 51 yards to cut the deficit to 14-9 early in the third quarter. New Orleans improved to 1-1 after also rallying from a large deficit in its season opener against Detroit, although that game ended in an overtime loss after a failed two-point attempt. Against Baltimore, the Saints recorded 10 first downs in the fourth quarter compared with two for the Ravens. “Our guys stuck with it all the way to the end, both games,” Moore said. “For both games to come down to one opportunity at the end, one possession, it's a good experience for our guys.” The Ravens entered the game after defeating Indianapolis 41-23 in Minter's first game as head coach. Baltimore was without wide receiver Zay Flowers, while offensive linemen Ronnie Stanley and John Simpson played despite earlier questions about their availability. Stanley later left the game with a toe injury.

The Saints also dealt with injuries. Left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. suffered an ankle injury, while cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. left with a shoulder injury. The Saints will host the Las Vegas Raiders next Sunday. The Ravens will face the Dallas Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro.
