Haynes King Delivers Walk-Off Heroics in Panthers’ Hall of Fame Game Victory.

CANTON, Ohio — Haynes King could not have asked for a more memorable introduction to the NFL. Making his professional debut Thursday night in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game, the Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback capped an impressive performance with a game-winning touchdown run, giving Carolina a dramatic 33-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. King took the field after veteran quarterback Kenny Pickett opened the game for Carolina and quickly provided the Panthers with a different dimension. The rookie finished 21-of-34 passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns while adding 39 rushing yards and another touchdown on three carries. But the numbers only tell part of the story. With the game hanging in the balance late in the fourth quarter, King relied on his legs to keep Carolina's final possession alive before ultimately finding the end zone himself. Trailing by three points, the Panthers faced a critical third-and-14. King dropped back looking for an open receiver, but with the defense covering his options, he decided to take off. The decision paid off. King broke into open space and picked up enough yardage for a first down. Rather than continue toward the middle of the field with the clock running, he wisely headed for the sideline to stop the clock and preserve Carolina's opportunity to win. "He's made a concerted effort to be in timing and rhythm, and you saw some of that too," Panthers head coach Dave Canales said after the game. Canales said King's ability to recognize when to throw and when to use his athleticism is an important part of his development.

Carolina's coaching staff has encouraged King to continue developing as a passer without taking away one of his biggest strengths — his mobility. "We're not trying to make Haynes anything other than what he is," Canales said. That approach became evident throughout King's performance. The rookie consistently operated the offense with quick decisions and efficient communication at the line of scrimmage. When opportunities to throw were available, he took them. When the defense gave him an opening to run, he wasn't afraid to use it. That balance became especially important during the game's final possession. After converting the third-down situation with his legs, King and the Panthers continued moving toward the end zone. Carolina eventually faced another critical fourth-down situation, and Canales had no hesitation about keeping the offense on the field. Because the preseason does not feature overtime, the Panthers were determined to play for the win rather than settle for a tie. Five plays after his crucial third-down run, King found another opening and raced into the end zone for the decisive score. His teammates immediately surrounded him. Wide receiver David Moore, who has only spent a short time playing alongside King, said he knew the quarterback was going to run when he saw the opportunity develop. "When they called it, and he didn't look at the receiver, I knew he was going to run," Moore said. Moore also praised the rookie's overall performance, calling the ending one of the most memorable preseason moments he had experienced during his NFL career. King, meanwhile, remained focused on the team rather than his individual performance. After the game, Canales joked with his young quarterback and encouraged him to "stay humble." King's response fit the personality his teammates have seen throughout training camp. "He knows I'm going to stay humble," King said. The night also carried an interesting storyline because of King's matchup with Arizona quarterback Carson Beck.

The two quarterbacks previously faced each other in college during the historic Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry game that went eight overtimes. Their first NFL preseason meeting produced another close contest, this time with King coming out on top. King credited Beck while acknowledging the respect he has for the Cardinals quarterback. "He's a great player, tremendous talent," King said. "He's played at the biggest of stages, and he's balled out." For King, however, the biggest moment came after the final whistle.

Surrounded by his teammates after scoring the winning touchdown, the rookie said the experience was difficult to put into words. "I couldn't breathe," King joked. After months of offseason work, organized team activities and training camp, King finally had an opportunity to showcase his abilities in an NFL game. And when the moment arrived, he made the most of it. The Panthers' rookie quarterback may not know where the game ball ended up, but the memory of his NFL debut — and a walk-off touchdown in the Hall of Fame Game — is one he'll have for a long time.
