Australia made a dream start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, defeating Türkiye 2-0 in their Group stage opener thanks to goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe.
The Socceroos secured just their fifth-ever FIFA World Cup victory and took an important step toward advancing from the group stage for only the third time in the nation's history.
Head coach Tony Popovic made five changes to the side that faced Switzerland in Australia's final pre-tournament friendly, bringing Jacob Italiano, Jordan Bos, Connor Metcalfe, Cameron Burgess, and Mohamed Toure into the starting lineup. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach retained his place between the posts for only his third senior international appearance, while Paul Okon-Engstler earned another start in midfield. With ten players making their World Cup debuts, Australia showed little sign of nerves in a fast-paced opening half that saw chances created at both ends. The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute when Okon-Engstler launched a precise ball over the top of the Turkish defense. Nestory Irankunda raced onto it, used his pace to break free, and calmly slotted his finish past goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakir to give Australia a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Irankunda's first at a FIFA World Cup and his sixth for the senior national team. Türkiye nearly responded immediately, but Beach produced one of the saves of the match. Abdülkerim Bardakci unleashed a powerful effort from outside the area, only for the young goalkeeper to dive full stretch and tip the shot onto the post. Although Türkiye controlled much of the possession throughout the first half, Australia remained dangerous on the counterattack and carried their one-goal advantage into the break.
The Socceroos continued to threaten after halftime, with Mohamed Toure and Jordan Bos combining early to force a corner. At the other end, Australia's defensive unit stood firm as Türkiye increased the pressure in search of an equalizer. Beach was again called into action midway through the second half, making another impressive save to deny Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler from a direct free kick. Popovic made his first substitution in the 61st minute, replacing goalscorer Irankunda with Nishan Velupillay, who made his World Cup debut. Türkiye created one of their best opportunities in the 72nd minute when Zeki Çelik broke through on the right side, but Beach once again stood tall to preserve Australia's lead.
Australia then delivered the decisive moment of the match in the 75th minute. Connor Metcalfe found space outside the penalty area, shifted onto his left foot, and curled a superb strike into the corner of the net. The goal doubled Australia's advantage and marked Metcalfe's first World Cup goal and only his second international goal overall.
Beach continued his standout performance late in the match, denying Kerem Aktürkoglu from close range as Türkiye desperately searched for a way back into the contest.
Veterans Jackson Irvine and Aziz Behich entered in the closing stages to help see out the result, and Australia remained organized defensively to secure a clean sheet and an impressive opening-day victory. The win gives the Socceroos three valuable points and early momentum as they continue their quest to reach the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
