No. 12 TCU Horned Frogs women's basketball strengthened its Big 12 championship pursuit Wednesday night with a decisive 72-50 road win over the Houston Cougars women's basketball in Houston.
The latest conference update moves TCU to 24-4 overall and 12-3 in Big 12 play under head coach Mark Campbell, keeping the Horned Frogs firmly in the regular season title race entering the final stretch. Houston fell to 7-19 and 1-14 in league competition, extending a difficult late season slide.
Marta Suarez delivered a perimeter driven performance, scoring 21 points while shooting 5-10 from three point range. Her efficiency from beyond the arc provided early separation and helped offset a night in which TCU shot 39 percent overall at 26-66 from the field.
Olivia Miles added 18 points and continued to orchestrate the offense in transition and half court sets. Veronica Sheffey contributed 11 points off the bench, reinforcing TCU’s depth advantage. Despite modest overall shooting numbers, the Horned Frogs controlled tempo through defensive pressure and rebounding discipline.
Houston struggled to generate consistent offense, finishing 14-60 from the field for 23 percent and just 2-15 from three point range at 13 percent. Kyndall Hunter led the Cougars with 20 points, accounting for a significant share of the team’s scoring. TK Pitts added 11 rebounds, but Houston was unable to convert second chance opportunities into sustained runs.
TCU established control early, building an 11-6 advantage midway through the first quarter and extending the margin to 19-8 after one period. By halftime, the Horned Frogs led 41-19, effectively dictating the game’s timeline. Houston’s most productive stretch came in the third quarter when it shot 6-16, yet TCU still outscored the Cougars 22-18 in the period to maintain a comfortable cushion.
From a historical perspective, TCU is attempting to become the first program in Big 12 history to win two regular season titles within three seasons of finishing last in the conference standings. That rapid turnaround under Campbell reflects roster development, transfer portal integration, and improved defensive metrics.
What this means moving forward is significant for the Big 12 race. At 12-3 in conference play, TCU remains within reach of the top seed entering the conference tournament. Consistent perimeter shooting and defensive efficiency will determine whether the Horned Frogs can secure the regular season crown and strengthen their NCAA Tournament seeding profile.
For Houston, the outlook centers on player development and offensive recalibration. The Cougars have now lost five straight and 14 of their last 15, with shooting efficiency and turnover control emerging as priority areas in the final games.
Next steps arrive Sunday when TCU hosts Iowa State in a matchup that could further shape the Big 12 standings. With limited regular season contests remaining, each result carries measurable impact on conference positioning and national tournament projections.
