Team USA Defeats Canada 5-3 to Reach World Baseball Classic Semifinal Against Dominican Republic

HOUSTON — Team USA secured a place in the World Baseball Classic semifinal round Friday night with a 5-3 victory over Canada, setting up a highly anticipated matchup against the Dominican Republic in one of the tournament’s most anticipated international showdowns.

The win sends the United States into the next stage of the competition where it will face a Dominican Republic team that has dominated the tournament offensively. The semifinal matchup is scheduled for Sunday evening in Miami and marks the first meeting between the two nations in the event since 2017.

The latest timeline of Friday’s game saw the United States build an early lead before withstanding a late push from Canada. Team USA scored in the opening inning when Kyle Schwarber produced a run scoring groundout that gave the Americans a 1-0 advantage.

The offense added two more runs in the third inning during a sequence that highlighted defensive pressure on Canada. With the bases loaded, Canadian third baseman Abraham Toro fielded a ground ball but his throw sailed past first baseman Josh Naylor, allowing two runs to score and extending the United States lead.

The Americans increased the margin to 5-0 in the sixth inning as Brice Turang and Pete Crow Armstrong each delivered run scoring singles.

Starting pitcher Logan Webb played a key role in the result. Webb delivered 4⅔ scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out five batters across 71 pitches. His combination of sinker, changeup, and sweeper kept the Canadian lineup off balance throughout his outing and earned him a standing ovation when he exited the game.

Canada responded later in the sixth inning when Tyler Black produced a run scoring single against reliever Brad Keller. Moments later, catcher Bo Naylor launched a two run home run against Gabe Speier that reduced the deficit to 5-3 and brought momentum back to the Canadian side.

The most tense moment of the night arrived in the seventh inning. Reliever David Bednar allowed two infield singles and a passed ball that left runners on second and third with no outs. Canada threatened to tie the game but Bednar escaped the situation by forcing Josh Naylor into a pop out, striking out Tyler O’Neill, and getting rookie Owen Caissie to chase a splitter on a full count.

Garrett Whitlock and Mason Miller combined to record the final six outs and secure the victory for the United States.

The breaking update from the tournament bracket now sets up a semifinal matchup that many observers expected entering the competition. Dominican Republic fans in Miami openly called for the showdown following their previous victory, chanting for a matchup with the United States.

The Dominican Republic has been the most explosive offensive team in the tournament. Through five wins the club has outscored opponents 51-10 while producing a team batting line of .312 average, .453 on base percentage, and .637 slugging percentage. The lineup has also hit 14 home runs, tying a record for the most by a single team in the history of the event.

Team USA’s offensive production has been less consistent. After scoring 24 runs combined against Brazil and Great Britain early in the tournament, the lineup has relied on timely hits rather than sustained run production in recent games.

Team captain Aaron Judge emphasized the need for situational offense moving forward.

“If we are going to win this tournament like we believe we can, it is going to take more than home runs,” Judge said. “There will be times when we need to move runners and create runs in different ways.”

The pitching outlook for the semifinal provides optimism for the United States. National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes is scheduled to start against the Dominican Republic lineup. Manager Mark DeRosa indicated Skenes could throw between 75 and 80 pitches in the game, slightly below the tournament maximum allowed for semifinal and championship rounds.

The Dominican Republic is expected to counter with right handed pitcher Luis Severino, who will face a United States lineup featuring several major league stars including Judge, Bryce Harper, and Schwarber.

The matchup also carries historical significance for the tournament. The United States captured its only World Baseball Classic championship in 2017, eliminating the Dominican Republic during that run. The Dominican Republic won its lone title in 2013 and remains one of the most talented rosters in international baseball.

Sunday’s semifinal will determine which powerhouse advances to the championship round, making it one of the most important games of the tournament and a defining moment in the latest World Baseball Classic timeline.
