Tempo to Open Athlete Performance and Training Centre in 2028.

The Toronto Tempo are set to fulfill their players' expectations as the team's inaugural WNBA season approaches. In collaboration with the City of Toronto, the Tempo announced plans for a new practice facility at Exhibition Place, located near the team’s home arena, Coca-Cola Coliseum. "This is incredibly important for the team," said Tempo president Teresa Resch. "Professional women athletes need facilities like this to perform at their best. This need was clearly stated in recent CBA negotiations, and it's something these athletes have long deserved." Scheduled for completion by the start of the 2028 season, the Tempo Performance Centre will feature two WNBA regulation courts, sports medicine and performance areas, recovery spaces, player lounges, locker rooms, a theatre for film study, and business offices. The facility will also include outdoor courts and a mini soccer pitch.

Funded entirely by the Tempo, the new facility will be built on an "underused" parking lot leased to the team by the city. It will be open to the public during the WNBA off-season or when the team is away, offering 2,200 hours of programming each year. Resch emphasized that the facility played a significant role in the team's recruitment strategy for free agents. "Players expect this level of accommodation in every market, and they should," she noted. "We shared the vision for the facility with free agents even before today’s public announcement." Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow stated that the plan would be presented to city council for approval by the end of the month, with construction to follow soon after. "I believe the council will fully support it," said Chow. "I’ve been involved in the negotiations to ensure public access to the facility since it will be built on city land."

Paul Farish, the City of Toronto's director of parks planning and strategic initiatives, explained that the property had originally been slated to become a park. However, the Tempo's project has expedited that process, advancing the park’s development ahead of schedule. The Tempo, one of two expansion teams joining the WNBA this season, will make their debut on May 8 against the Washington Mystics. The franchise, led by Toronto-based billionaire Larry Tanenbaum through Kilmer Sports Ventures, paid US$50 million to bring Canada its first WNBA team. "When we set out to establish the Tempo, we didn’t just want to create a team—we wanted to build something lasting," Tanenbaum said. "The Tempo Performance Centre will stand as proof of that commitment. It will be one of the finest athlete training facilities in the world."
