Texas vs Georgia SEC Basketball: Longhorns Surge Past No. 21 Bulldogs 87 to 67 in Statement Win

Austin, Texas — Texas delivered a decisive SEC statement on Saturday, erasing a halftime deficit with a dominant second half to defeat No. 21 Georgia 87 to 67 at Moody Center in a result that reshapes both teams conference outlooks.

Dailyn Swain led the Longhorns with 26 points on 12 of 16 shooting, adding five steals as Texas overwhelmed Georgia after the break. Tramon Mark followed with a season high 23 points, including 16 in the second half, as Texas flipped a seven point halftime deficit into a 20 point victory.

Texas entered the locker room trailing but emerged with one of its most efficient halves of the season. The Longhorns outscored Georgia 57 to 30 after halftime while shooting 69 percent from the field, repeatedly attacking mismatches and forcing turnovers that fueled momentum swings.

Mark ignited the run with 10 consecutive points early in the second half, highlighted by back to back three pointers that shifted control. That surge sparked a 17 to 2 stretch that put the game out of reach, with Cam Heide knocking down two three pointers during the run. Texas finished the second half 5 of 11 from beyond the arc after struggling offensively in the opening 20 minutes.

Matas Vokietaitis contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks despite early foul trouble that limited his first half minutes. Jordan Pope added 14 points, scoring 10 after halftime as Texas continued to extend the margin through balanced scoring and defensive pressure.

The win underscored the volatility of Texas season under head coach Rodney Terry. The Longhorns improved to 12 and 8 overall and 3 and 4 in SEC play, adding Georgia to a growing list of Top 25 victories that already includes Alabama and Vanderbilt. At the same time, Texas has dropped home games to unranked Mississippi State and Texas A & M, highlighting the inconsistency that has defined its conference campaign.

Georgia entered the game averaging a nation leading 94.8 points per contest but was held 28 points below that mark. The Bulldogs managed just seven fast break points, 17 fewer than their season average, as Texas limited transition opportunities and controlled the tempo.

Jeremiah Wilkson paced Georgia with 17 points but shot 4 of 12 from the field as Texas defenders crowded driving lanes. Somto Cyril added 12 points for the Bulldogs, who fell to 16 and 4 overall and 4 and 3 in SEC play.

From a broader SEC perspective, the result tightens the middle of the standings and reinforces Texas as a high variance but dangerous opponent capable of elite stretches on both ends. For Georgia, the loss raises questions about offensive sustainability against physical half court defenses as the conference schedule intensifies.

Next steps see Georgia returning home to host Tennessee on Tuesday night in a key SEC matchup.

Texas faces another major test Wednesday night on the road at Auburn, where the Longhorns will look to build on this latest momentum swing as league play continues.
