In a move that adds depth to their quarterback room, the Denver Broncos have officially signed quarterback Sam Ehlinger to a one-year deal. The signing comes as the Broncos continue to solidify their roster for the upcoming 2025 NFL season.

Ehlinger, 25, was previously with the Indianapolis Colts, where he showed promise as a backup quarterback after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The former University of Texas star played in limited action during his time in Indianapolis, primarily serving as a reserve option behind starting quarterbacks. Though his career numbers have been modest so far, Ehlinger’s mobility and experience running the Colts’ offense make him an intriguing addition to the Broncos' squad.

Sam Ehlinger began his football career at the University of Texas, where he made a name for himself as one of the Big 12’s top quarterbacks. Over the course of his four-year college career, Ehlinger set multiple records for the Longhorns, including career passing yards and touchdowns. He was known for his dual-threat capabilities, with the ability to make plays both through the air and on the ground.

After declaring for the NFL Draft, Ehlinger was selected by the Colts, where he spent the first few seasons of his professional career learning under veteran quarterbacks. Though he has appeared in a few games, including a start against the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, Ehlinger has not yet had an extended run as a starting quarterback at the NFL level.

In his limited action with the Colts, Ehlinger showcased his ability to make plays with his legs while being capable of managing the pocket. He enters the Broncos' training camp with an opportunity to earn a spot behind starting quarterback Russell Wilson, who is entering his third season with the team. For the Broncos, the signing of Sam Ehlinger is likely an insurance move in the quarterback room. With Russell Wilson firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback, Ehlinger is expected to compete for the backup spot, providing depth behind one of the NFL’s top veterans.

The Broncos have already invested heavily in their quarterback position, but Ehlinger’s mobility and playmaking ability could provide a nice complement to Wilson’s more traditional style of play. His experience in different systems, especially under Colts head coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Marcus Brady, could prove valuable if called upon to step into a starting role for any reason.

Ehlinger will have an opportunity to prove himself during the Broncos’ offseason workouts and training camp. Head coach Sean Payton, known for his ability to develop quarterbacks, will be watching closely as Ehlinger looks to carve out a role within the offense.

The addition of Sam Ehlinger adds a layer of competition to the Broncos’ quarterback situation, with backup QB Jarrett Stidham also in the mix. For now, Ehlinger’s future in Denver remains uncertain, but his one-year deal gives him a chance to show that he can contribute to a team looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 season.

As the 2025 season approaches, the Broncos will hope that Ehlinger’s presence provides not only solid depth but also the kind of spark they need should their quarterback room face any unexpected challenges.
