The Colorado Buffaloes football team, under the leadership of head coach Deion Sanders, has had an impressive start to the 2024 season. Currently, the team holds a 4-1 record overall and is undefeated in Big 12 conference play (2-0). Key players include quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is drawing attention as a potential top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Travis Hunter, a standout on both offense and defense.

The Buffs' defense, which struggled in 2023, allowing 34.8 points per game, has seen significant improvements with new transfers and a revamped defensive scheme. Players like Sam Okunlola and Quency Wiggins have bolstered the defensive line, while Travis Hunter continues to lead the secondary. Special teams have been solid as well, with kicker Alejandro Mata and punter Mark Vassett returning for another strong season. The next big test for Colorado will be against Kansas State on October 12 at Folsom Field, followed by a matchup with Arizona.

Defense improvements

The Colorado Buffaloes defense has seen considerable improvements in 2024, primarily due to the infusion of new talent and a strategic overhaul led by defensive coordinator Robert Livingston. One of the major changes is the switch to a 4-2-5 defensive scheme, which focuses on utilizing more defensive backs to counter high-octane offenses. This system aligns well with the team’s strengths, particularly with star players like Travis Hunter leading the secondary. Several key transfers have also bolstered the defensive line, including Sam Okunlola from Pittsburgh and Quency Wiggins from LSU, both of whom bring physicality and experience to a previously struggling front. Additionally, B.J. Green from Arizona State has helped improve the pass rush. These changes have made the Buffaloes more capable of pressuring opposing quarterbacks and defending against the run .

The team's defensive struggles in 2023, where they allowed over 450 yards per game, are gradually being addressed as the new recruits adapt to the system and develop chemistry. The overall talent upgrade and strategic adjustments are helping the Buffs become more competitive, especially in conference play.

The Colorado Buffaloes are managing a few key injuries as they head into their upcoming games. Shilo Sanders, the team's safety and Coach Deion Sanders' son, has been recovering from a forearm injury that sidelined him for multiple weeks. He is expected to return soon but may still miss some time. Defensive lineman Chidozie Nwankwo, who also suffered a forearm injury earlier, is on track to return to action. Running back Dallan Hayden, however, remains doubtful for the next game.

buffs next opponent

The Colorado Buffaloes' next opponent is Kansas State, with the game scheduled for October 12, 2024, at Folsom Field in Boulder. This Big 12 conference matchup will be a key test for Colorado as they aim to maintain momentum in their strong start to the season. Kansas State football has shown considerable strengths this season, which makes them a tough opponent. One of their key assets is a highly experienced offense, led by senior quarterback Will Howard and running back DJ Giddens. Their offense is balanced, excelling both in the air and on the ground, with strong performances from wide receivers like Jayce Brown. Giddens, in particular, has been a standout in their rushing game, averaging significant yardage in key games. Defensively, Kansas State has a solid front, effective at stopping the run and pressuring quarterbacks. Last season, they ranked among the top 30 in the country for scoring defense and were highly efficient on third downs, allowing just 30.2% conversions. Their ability to force turnovers (they ranked fourth nationally in turnover margin last year) also gives them a dangerous edge, often capitalizing on opponents' mistakes. In summary, Kansas State's strengths lie in their experienced offense, solid run game, and a disciplined defense that thrives on stopping third-down conversions and creating turnovers. These factors will likely define their matchup strategies.
