The New England Patriots have signed guard Alijah Vera-Tucker to a three-year contract worth $42 million. The move addresses a pressing need on the Patriots’ offensive line by acquiring a free agent from a division rival. Vera-Tucker joins New England following a triceps injury that caused him to miss his final season with the New York Jets. While he possesses notable potential as a guard, his history of injuries presents a significant risk. When healthy, Vera-Tucker has been regarded as a talented player. However, his performance metrics have not consistently reflected that reputation. Between 2021 and 2024, he ranked in the 36th percentile for pass block win rate and only the 3rd percentile for run block win rate. Additionally, his durability has been a concern; over a five-year career, Vera-Tucker has appeared in only 43 of a possible 85 games and has suffered three major injuries, including a torn Achilles and triceps tears in both arms. At an average of $14 million per year, Vera-Tucker’s contract is slightly less than those of Zion Johnson and David Edwards and slightly more than Isaac Seumalo. During his time with the Jets, Vera-Tucker played both left and right guard, most recently occupying the right side. Given that Mike Onwenu played exclusively at right guard last season, it is likely that Vera-Tucker will take over as left guard for the Patriots. Nevertheless, his experience at tackle adds valuable versatility, particularly if the team chooses to transition Will Campbell from left tackle in the future.
