The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran kicker Brandon McManus, potentially marking the seventh attempt to solidify their kicking position. The official one-year contract was finalized on Wednesday, and McManus is anticipated to participate in the upcoming game against the Houston Texans at Lambeau Field. Throughout the first six games of the season, the Packers relied solely on rookie Brayden Narveson, despite having cycled through six other kickers since the conclusion of the previous season. Among these, Alex Hale remains on the practice squad. In a corresponding roster adjustment, the Packers released Narveson on Wednesday. Narveson, who was acquired off waivers from the Tennessee Titans in late August, has struggled this season, missing a league-high five field goal attempts, including a crucial 44-yarder in the recent victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Initially, the Packers opted to retain Greg Joseph over last year's kicker, Anders Carlson, at the end of the preseason. They also had James Turner and Jack Podlesny on their 90-man offseason roster at various times. When questioned on Monday about the possibility of a kicking change, Packers coach Matt LaFleur stated, "I wouldn't say that right now, no," while indicating that they would evaluate the situation on a daily basis. This was prior to the team's workout with McManus on Tuesday. The 33-year-old kicker played for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, successfully converting 30 of 37 field goal attempts and all 35 extra-point attempts. He had signed a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Washington Commanders during the offseason but was released in early June following allegations of sexual assault made by two flight attendants related to a trip to London in September 2023. The NFL announced on September 30 that it found insufficient evidence to conclude that McManus had violated the league's personal conduct policy. League spokesman Brian McCarthy noted that any new evidence would be duly considered.
