WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced on Thursday that boxing star Ryan Garcia has been expelled from all activities with the organization due to his repeated use of racial slurs against Black people and disparaging comments about Muslims, which were livestreamed on social media.
"We reject any form of discrimination," Sulaiman wrote. "I fear for Ryan well being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse."
The sanctions that the WBC would impose on Garcia were not immediately evident, as he is currently under a one-year suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission due to testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine. This suspension dates back to Garcia's decision victory over Devin Haney on April 20, which was later changed to a no-contest.
Garcia issued a apologetic statement on X.
"I was trolling I want all the killing to stop," Garcia wrote. "I love everyone sorry if I offended you."
Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Garcia, denounced Garcia's comments in a social media post on Friday.
"There is no room for hate or intolerance at my company. Period. I condemn Ryan's words in the strongest terms possible," the statement said. "I see that he has apologized, and that is a start - but it is only a start to earn back the trust and respect of those of us who have and continue to support him. We hope Ryan will use the time he has away from the sport to work through the issues he has publicly discussed. We stand ready to help in whatever we can."
Garcia, 25, has had a turbulent year, culminating in his arrest on felony vandalism charges last month following an incident at a Beverly Hills hotel that resulted in an estimated $15,000 in damage. In response to the penalty imposed by the WBC, Garcia's family issued a statement addressing his recent troubling behavior and social media comments, emphasizing that these do not align with his or their family's true character or beliefs. The statement also explicitly disavowed any statements made by Garcia regarding race or religion, asserting that they do not reflect his true identity or upbringing. "Those who know Ryan can attest to this fact. Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being."
