Travis Kelce Joins Guardians Ownership Group as Minority Investor.

Travis Kelce is expanding his business portfolio into Major League Baseball, purchasing a minority stake in the Cleveland Guardians ownership group. The longtime Kansas City Chiefs star said the investment represents more than a business move — it is a chance to reconnect with the team and city that shaped his childhood. Raised in Cleveland Heights, Kelce grew up attending games during Cleveland’s successful baseball run of the 1990s and described himself as a lifelong fan of the franchise. “I have so much love for this city,” Kelce told ESPN. “I’m just a kid from the Heights living the dream.” Kelce said memories of taking Cleveland’s rapid transit downtown with his father to watch games remain some of the defining moments of his youth. He recalled stars such as Kenny Lofton, Jim Thome and Carlos Baerga as key figures from the era that inspired his love for baseball. Before becoming one of football’s top tight ends, Kelce was also considered a standout baseball prospect in northeast Ohio. During his senior year of high school in 2008, he hit .588 with six home runs and later played summer baseball as a powerful outfielder with strong speed and arm strength. “I always felt most confident on the diamond,” Kelce said, noting that baseball initially appeared to be his most realistic route to professional sports before football ultimately took over. The Guardians’ current valuation is estimated around $1.7 billion, a significant rise from 2022 when minority owner David Blitzer purchased a share of the franchise that includes a future path to majority ownership.

Kelce now joins a growing list of active athletes investing in MLB franchises. Other notable names include LeBron James with the Boston Red Sox, Giannis Antetokounmpo with the Milwaukee Brewers, and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who owns a minority stake in the Kansas City Royals. Kelce’s investment portfolio already includes ownership interests in a Formula 1 team, restaurant ventures, beverage companies and media projects, including his popular podcast. The Guardians, who adopted their current name in 2022, currently sit atop the American League Central standings after winning the division in each of the last two seasons. Kelce joked that Cleveland’s lead over Mahomes’ Royals will likely become a topic of conversation inside the Chiefs locker room. “We’re both as competitive as it gets,” Kelce said. “There will definitely be bragging rights on the line.”
