Early in the season, the Colorado Rockies have been struggling with injuries, notably missing their Gold-Glove shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, who has been sidelined for nearly two weeks. Earlier this month, Tovar sustained a hip injury and was initially put on the 10-day injured list due to a left hip contusion, with his return expected for Tuesday’s match against the Atlanta Braves. Before the series began, Bud Black provided an unfavorable update regarding the shortstop's condition.
Black recently mentioned that he is improving, but he is not advancing as we had expected. "We were expecting him to return to the lineup after 10 days, but that is not what happened. " This is a challenging situation; only the player understands his own emotions. Black is optimistic that Tovar will be back on the team by the beginning of next week. The 23-year-old is having a hard time getting his season going (much like others on the Rockies), with a slash line of . 188/. 188/. 250. In the current season, he has made three mistakes in the field, although he only had eight errors throughout all of 2024. Kris Bryant, Tyler Freeman, and Aaron Schunk are among the other players on Colorado's 10-day injured list. Victor Vodnik is currently placed on the 15-day injured list, while both Austin Gomber and Thairo Estrada are on the 60-day injured list. Recently, Bryant went to see a doctor in Los Angeles to talk more about his degenerative disc disease. He has not decided to pursue surgery yet, which would probably keep him sidelined for the entire season. However, considering that the less aggressive treatment methods have failed, it could be a viable choice for him. In August, Milwaukee's Christian Yelich underwent the same surgery that Bryant would later have, and he has returned to play for the Brewers.
After experiencing low back soreness that delayed his start from Sunday to Monday, Ryan Feltner successfully pitched on Monday night. In Monday’s game, he surrendered 10 hits over 4. 2 innings and allowed five earned runs, resulting in a loss for him. Black expressed his difficulty in not being able to combine Tovar with Estrada in the center of the infield, a duo he has recently come to appreciate greatly. Black said, “I was really excited about the Estrada/Tovar pairing that we observed until May 20th and during spring training. Estrada has started light drills again, but he is still some time away from being ready to play for the Rockies. During his 94 games as a second baseman for the San Francisco Giants in 2024, he only made two errors. Throughout his six seasons in the major leagues, he has made no more than five mistakes while playing at second base.
Black mentioned that he hopes the [defensive pairing] will become evident here eventually, noting that Thairo is a solid defender who tends to fly under the radar and is somewhat reserved. During the remainder of his speech, Black maintained an optimistic outlook regarding the team, even though they had experienced the worst beginning in the 149 years of the National League's history. Even though it would be great to see this team become healthy, that alone won't resolve the more serious problems that this club has. Black is likely to lead one of the poorest teams in league history, even inferior to the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, who had a winning percentage of only . 130.
