The Minnesota Vikings are working to keep defensive coordinator Brian Flores as his contract approaches its expiration, according to head coach Kevin O’Connell. Speaking Monday, O’Connell said discussions with Flores have been productive and expressed optimism about continuing their partnership. While Flores may become a candidate for an NFL head coaching position this offseason, O’Connell indicated that he does not expect Flores to leave Minnesota for a similar coordinator role elsewhere. He emphasized that Flores enjoys being with the organization and has shown interest in reaching a new agreement once the season concludes. Flores joined the Vikings in January 2023 after filing a lawsuit against the NFL and several teams, alleging discriminatory hiring practices related to head coaching interviews and his dismissal from the Miami Dolphins. Since arriving in Minnesota, Flores has led one of the league’s strongest defenses, ranking fifth in expected points added per play over the past three seasons. Although Flores interviewed for multiple head coaching jobs last year, he did not receive an offer.

The Vikings chose not to extend his contract before the 2025 season, allowing him flexibility to pursue opportunities this offseason. Despite that, O’Connell made clear that retaining Flores remains a top priority. O’Connell praised Flores not only for his defensive success but also for his leadership and personal impact on the coaching staff. He credited Flores with helping the team navigate challenges throughout the season and expressed a strong desire to keep him in Minnesota for as long as possible.
