Paul George has decided not to fulfill the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers and will become an unrestricted free agent, as confirmed by CBS Sports' Bill Reiter. He intends to arrange meetings with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Orlando Magic, and the Clippers on Sunday night, according to The Athletic. George has been a part of the Clippers since they acquired both him and Kawhi Leonard in the summer of 2019. Despite their efforts, the duo has not been able to reach the NBA Finals in five seasons together, mainly due to injuries suffered by both players in or before the postseason. Now, George will explore other possibilities for his future.

Negotiations between George and the Clippers have been strained since last season. In January, the Clippers secured Leonard with a three-year, $153 million extension that fell short of his maximum potential. Subsequent reports have suggested that the Clippers are aiming to secure George with a similar deal. However, George is pushing for a four-year maximum contract. He expressed his desire to reach a new agreement with the Clippers, his hometown team, during the season, but opted to remain unsigned into the summer, taking a risk, and now seeks to be compensated with a maximum contract.

If the Clippers refuse to offer him a max contract, there are several teams expected to step in. The 76ers are leading the pack, and speculation was widespread earlier this month when George appeared on ESPN's NBA Countdown with 76ers star Joel Embiid. The Magic have also been rumored as a potential destination, and while there have been no reports linking them, it's worth noting that one of George's former teams, the Oklahoma City Thunder, have significant cap space and could potentially reach the max through trades if necessary. The Clippers have heavily invested in this team, trading an enormous amount of draft capital to secure George and then doubling down last season by trading more picks to get James Harden, who is also a free agent. If George leaves without compensation, the Clippers will have limited means of replacing him, and with all of their picks belonging to other teams, transitioning into a rebuild would be challenging.

The second apron is causing fear among almost every team in the NBA. The Clippers appear hesitant to offer George his requested contract, which could result in them being locked into a team that has not proven to be championship-caliber yet. This decision could also limit their ability to make improvements and freeze future first-round picks at the end of the first round. Currently, George and his team are at a standstill. He seems to be pushing for a higher payment, while they are hoping he will accept a discount. With his decision to opt out, George is now free to leave once free agency begins. If he chooses to do so, the Clippers may end up with nothing in return.
