Golden State Warriors fans have been anticipating Klay Thompson's departure for quite some time now, however, the likelihood of it happening became more concrete on Saturday with the report from The Athletic stating that the team is preparing for Thompson's exit. Communication between the Warriors and Thompson has been minimal in the last two weeks, during which they had the opportunity to discuss his return exclusively. It is now believed by both parties that Thompson's time in the Bay Area has come to an end.

Thompson had already issued a clear warning by deleting all references to the Warriors on his social media accounts. As he prepares to enter free agency for the first time in his 13-year career this Sunday, the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Dallas Mavericks are said to be strong contenders for his services. All three teams are aiming to compete next season and are in need of additional 3-point shooting. Several other teams with available salary cap space are also expected to express interest. The Lakers and Mavericks are both able to offer Thompson the $12.9 million midlevel exception, with LeBron James reportedly willing to accept a lower salary to assist the Lakers. Additionally, the Warriors are open to exploring a sign-and-trade agreement.

Klay Thompson had an exceptional career with the Warriors. Despite his impending departure from the team, his legacy as a key figure in a dominant era remains untarnished. His contribution goes beyond his four championship rings, as he and Stephen Curry formed one of the most formidable backcourts in NBA history, revolutionizing the game with their 3-point shooting prowess. Thompson's impressive ranking on the NBA's all-time 3-pointer list, alongside other greats like Curry, Ray Allen, James Harden, Damian Lillard, and Reggie Miller, showcases his impact despite not always being the primary shooter on his team. Alongside Curry and Harden, he stands as one of the few players to achieve over 300 3-pointers in a single season.

He still holds the record for the most 3-pointers in a single game with 14, as well as the record for consecutive 3-pointers made. Thompson's ability to unleash unstoppable onslaughts on the court is unmatched by few in NBA history. Unfortunately, his health has been a significant concern since 2019, when he suffered a torn ACL. This was followed by a torn Achilles tendon in 2020, leading to a 2 1/2 season hiatus. Despite making a recovery to contribute to the Warriors' championship in 2022, it was evident that the team would not offer him another substantial contract at the age of 34. Consequently, Thompson seems to be on the verge of departing. However, any departure is likely to be temporary, as he is destined to be inducted into the Hall of Fame upon retirement and will forever be remembered as a Warriors legend.
