White Sox Acquire Jordan Hicks and David Sandlin in Trade With Red Sox.

The Chicago White Sox continued their roster restructuring by acquiring right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks and pitching prospect David Sandlin from the Boston Red Sox. The move follows the organization’s decision to reinvest money saved after trading outfielder Luis Robert Jr. to the New York Mets earlier in January. Although Hicks is the most established player in the deal, Chicago reportedly prioritized Sandlin as the key return. To secure the young pitcher, the White Sox agreed to absorb a significant portion of Hicks’ remaining contract. In exchange, Boston received Class A right-hander Gage Ziehl, along with additional players to be named later, while also sending a player to be named to Chicago. White Sox general manager Chris Getz explained that the team intends to use the financial flexibility created by the Robert trade to invest in long-term contributors. Hicks, who is 29, is entering the final two seasons of a four-year, $44 million contract. Chicago will cover $17 million of the $25 million still owed to him. Hicks had previously been dealt from the San Francisco Giants to the Red Sox as part of the Rafael Devers trade, marking his second trade in less than a year. Sandlin, 24, spent the 2025 season splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A. He recorded a 4.50 ERA while striking out 107 batters over 106 innings. Known for a fastball that reaches triple digits, along with a sweeper and splitter, Sandlin is viewed by the White Sox as a potential mid-rotation starter who could contribute at the major league level as early as this season.

Hicks, meanwhile, is expected to play a key role in the bullpen, though he remains open to starting if needed. Since signing his long-term deal prior to the 2024 season, he has struggled with consistency, posting a 5.19 ERA over 177 innings. Despite allowing solid contact, his heavy sinker has helped keep his home run rate down. Team officials believe adjustments to his pitch mix and mechanics could help him regain effectiveness. The White Sox also recently signed closer Seranthony Domínguez and outfielder Austin Hays as part of their broader effort to rebound after consecutive losing seasons, including a 60–102 finish in 2025. To make room on the 40-man roster for Hicks and Sandlin, Chicago designated pitcher Jairo Iriarte and catcher Drew Romo for assignment. Hicks expressed optimism about joining a young team and embracing a leadership role, stating that he feels healthier than he has in recent years and is eager to contribute however the team needs.
