Why Jaguars’ Travis Hunter Focused on Wide Receiver During Offseason Programs

Travis Hunter, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has been one of the most talked-about players entering the league. Known for his rare ability to play at an elite level on both offense and defense, Hunter’s development has been a key storyline this offseason. Interestingly, the Jaguars have had him spending more time at wide receiver than at cornerback during offseason programs—but not for the reason many might assume. According to Jaguars general manager James Gladstone, the decision to prioritize Hunter’s offensive reps early on is based on strategic planning, not positional preference. “Our understanding is that Travis is most naturally comfortable, most naturally in-tune on the defensive side of the ball,” Gladstone said during an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “We wanted to load him offensively throughout this window… because there is so much more nuance”. The team views Hunter’s transition to the NFL as a two-phase process. Since cornerback is considered his more instinctive and natural role, the Jaguars are confident he can adjust to that side of the ball more quickly. On the other hand, wide receiver demands a deeper understanding of offensive timing, route concepts, and real-time adjustments—elements that take more repetition and mental preparation.

That’s why the Jaguars focused his on-field reps at receiver while gradually integrating defensive responsibilities through film study and meetings. By the end of the offseason, Hunter began seeing more reps at cornerback. Heading into training camp, he’s expected to take on both roles more equally, sometimes practicing on both sides of the ball in a single day. The plan going forward remains fluid. As Gladstone explained, how much Hunter plays on either side of the ball during the season will depend on game plans and weekly matchups. But there’s no doubt that the Jaguars are committed to developing Hunter into one of the NFL’s most versatile stars. The Jaguars’ careful onboarding strategy reflects just how rare Hunter’s skillset is. Balancing the demands of both offense and defense in the NFL is nearly unheard of, but if anyone can do it, it might just be Travis Hunter.
