Brandon Aiyuk, the star wide receiver, expressed his desire to remain with the San Francisco 49ers for the upcoming season despite the ongoing contract negotiations. Aiyuk, who is in the last year of his rookie contract, mentioned to TMZ Sports at Los Angeles International Airport that he is prepared to continue playing for the 49ers even though a contract extension has not been finalized.
During the video, Aiyuk can be seen conversing with Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels over FaceTime, his former teammate from Arizona State. Aiyuk informs Daniels, "They mentioned they are not interested in having me return." To which Daniels replies, "Is that all?"
"I swear," Aiyuk said, prompting Daniels to shout, "My boy!"
Aiyuk wrote in the caption of the post, "Im laughing but im crying fr."
It remains uncertain whether Aiyuk was suggesting that the 49ers do not wish to bring him back for the upcoming season or if he is indicating that the 49ers are not interested in retaining him beyond this season due to their reluctance to meet his contract demands for a potentially lucrative extension. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, discussions between Aiyuk and the 49ers have hit a snag. Aiyuk is about to enter the final year of his rookie contract and is expected to have a cap hit of $14.124 million in 2024. Following a successful season with 75 receptions, 1,342 yards, and seven touchdowns, the wide receiver did not take part in the 49ers' offseason activities and skipped the mandatory minicamp, potentially facing fines exceeding $101,000 for his absence.
49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel said during the team's minicamp that he has been in regular contact with Aiyuk throughout the offseason, offering his help when needed on how to navigate the contract situation. Samuel agreed to a three-year extension with the 49ers in 2022, but not before he demanded a trade due to the slow pace of his contract talks. His top piece of advice to Aiyuk has been to preach patience.
