Wisconsin Rally Stuns No. 9 Illinois 91-88 in Big Ten Tournament Overtime Thriller Behind Nick Boyd’s 38 Points

CHICAGO — Nick Boyd delivered a career performance with 38 points as No. 23 Wisconsin erased a 15 point second half deficit and defeated No. 9 Illinois 91-88 in overtime Friday night in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

The comeback victory sends Wisconsin into the semifinal round against No. 3 Michigan and stands as one of the most dramatic games of the tournament’s latest timeline in Chicago.

Boyd controlled the overtime period and finished with the highest scoring game of his collegiate career. John Blackwell added 31 points and continued a historic run in conference tournament play, becoming Wisconsin’s all time leading scorer in Big Ten Tournament games with 144 career points.

Illinois appeared in control midway through the second half when the Fighting Illini built a 60-45 lead. Wisconsin responded with a decisive scoring stretch fueled by defensive stops and timely perimeter shooting.

The Badgers cut the margin during a key sequence late in regulation. Trailing 67-63, Blackwell connected on a three point basket before Boyd converted two free throws. Austin Rapp followed with two more free throws to give Wisconsin a 70-67 lead with just over four minutes remaining.

Illinois answered as Andrej Stojakovic hit a tying three point shot. The back and forth finish continued when Stojakovic later grabbed an offensive rebound and drove for a layup that gave Illinois a 78-76 lead with just over one minute left.

Blackwell responded again at the free throw line, tying the score at 78 and forcing the game toward the final possession. Illinois had a chance to win in regulation when Keaton Wagler attempted a hook shot in the lane, but the attempt missed. Blackwell’s long range attempt at the buzzer also fell short, sending the game to overtime tied at 80.

Wisconsin quickly seized control during the extra period. Boyd scored in the paint to break the tie and Rapp followed with a three point basket that extended the lead to five with 2 minutes 33 seconds remaining.

The Badgers protected that margin during the closing minute. Boyd secured a critical rebound after a missed three point attempt by Rapp, which led to two free throws by Blackwell and an 87-81 advantage with 46 seconds left.

Illinois continued to pressure late. David Mirkovic scored a layup with six seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 90-88. Wisconsin guard Braeden Carrington split a pair of free throws moments later, leaving Illinois one final opportunity. Wagler attempted a long three point shot at the buzzer but the shot missed, securing the victory for Wisconsin.

Wagler and Mirkovic each scored 19 points for Illinois while Stojakovic contributed 17 points and seven rebounds. Despite strong production from multiple players, the Fighting Illini were unable to close out the game after controlling much of the second half.

The performance from Boyd carried significant impact for Wisconsin’s postseason outlook. His 38 points surpassed his previous career high of 36 set earlier in the season against Providence and highlighted the offensive depth of a Badgers roster that has surged late in the year.

The result also continues a competitive season series dynamic in the Big Ten. Wisconsin now advances to face Michigan in the semifinal round. Earlier this season the Badgers defeated the Wolverines 91-88 in Ann Arbor on January 10, handing Michigan its first loss of the season at that time.

For Illinois, the loss shifts focus toward the NCAA Tournament selection process. With a 24-8 record and multiple ranked victories during the season, the Fighting Illini remain positioned for a strong seed when the tournament field is announced.

The next steps now center on Wisconsin’s semifinal matchup against Michigan. The Wolverines, who defeated Ohio State 71-67 to reach the round, are pursuing a second consecutive Big Ten Tournament championship. Wisconsin enters the matchup with momentum after one of the most significant comeback victories of the conference postseason.
