RALEIGH, N.C. — Jackson Blake scored the decisive shootout goal as the Carolina Hurricanes overcame a late two-goal deficit to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Tuesday night. Mark Jankowski and Seth Jarvis each scored in the third period just 59 seconds apart, helping the Hurricanes erase the Penguins’ lead. Logan Stankoven and Alexander Nikishin also contributed goals for Carolina, which extended its home-ice points streak to 12 games. Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 24 saves in the matchup between the Metropolitan Division’s top two teams. For Pittsburgh, Bryan Rust scored twice, while Anthony Mantha and Noel Acciari added one goal each. Erik Karlsson and Egor Chinakhov recorded two assists apiece. Goaltender Stuart Skinner stopped 39 shots but has not earned a victory since January 31, with the Penguins going 1-2-2 in their last five games. In the shootout, Ben Kindel scored for Pittsburgh, and Andrei Svechnikov matched him for the Hurricanes before Blake’s game-winning tally. Nikishin set a franchise record for a rookie defenseman with his ninth goal of the season, scoring on a 5-on-3 power play to give Carolina a 4-2 lead with 8:39 remaining in regulation. Pittsburgh’s Acciari and Rust scored in the final 2:08 to force overtime, with Rust’s second goal coming with 35 seconds left. Carolina killed off a Pittsburgh power play in overtime.

Stankoven opened the scoring in the first period, while Mantha added a late first-period goal for the Penguins. Rust gave Pittsburgh the lead with a second-period power-play goal, setting the stage for the frenetic third period. The Hurricanes will host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, while the Penguins begin a five-game road trip in Las Vegas on Thursday.
