Broncos Training Camp Notebook: Receiver Rotation, Defensive Plays and Backup QB Battle Highlight Wednesday Practice.

2 min read

The Denver Broncos continued managing their roster carefully during training camp as injuries and position battles remain key storylines with the preseason opener now just nine days away. Head coach Sean Payton has emphasized the importance of being cautious with players returning from injuries, repeatedly saying the team will “be smart” with their workload. That approach could keep wide receiver Jaylen Waddle limited for the remainder of the week after he exited Wednesday’s practice. Veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton also missed his second straight practice session, but Payton confirmed Sutton is expected to return Thursday. With both Sutton and Waddle sidelined, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin and rookie Pat Bryant received increased opportunities with the starting offense. The Broncos’ receiver room continues to take shape, with Sutton, Waddle, Mims, Franklin and Bryant appearing to be the top group when healthy. If the team keeps that core intact, Denver would likely need to carry six receivers for another wideout to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. Franklin and Bryant made their presence felt during Wednesday’s team drills, each recording explosive plays. Franklin, in particular, appeared to have one of his strongest practices of camp as he continues competing for a larger role in the offense. Denver’s cornerback depth also stood out during practice. Kris Abrams-Draine made a big impact in an 11-on-11 period, intercepting quarterback Bo Nix and showcasing the competition taking place throughout the secondary.

The backup quarterback competition remains another position battle to monitor. Sam Ehlinger worked with the second-team offense during multiple periods Wednesday and continues to challenge Jarrett Stidham for the No. 2 quarterback role. Ehlinger returned to Denver this offseason after spending the 2025 season on the Broncos’ practice squad. The quarterback also reportedly passed on multiple opportunities to join teams with active roster spots last year as he remained committed to his development in Denver. With training camp continuing, the Broncos are using each practice to evaluate roster decisions while balancing player health ahead of the preseason.
