Bronny James has remained one of the most recognizable young players in professional basketball, despite limited time on the court. As the son of NBA legend LeBron James, his entry into the league came with intense attention, creating both opportunities and heightened expectations. While James may have still reached the NBA on his own merit, it is unlikely he would have received a guaranteed contract as a late second-round draft pick without his family name. During his second season with the Los Angeles Lakers, James’ role has noticeably diminished. Although he started one game earlier in the year, his recent appearances have been largely restricted to garbage-time minutes in lopsided games. This pattern suggests a lack of confidence from head coach JJ Redick, especially notable given the Lakers’ ongoing struggles and need for consistent production from their backcourt.

In theory, James possesses the physical tools—athleticism, defensive potential, and length—to earn rotational minutes. However, his performance has not justified increased playing time. His time in the G League has also failed to generate momentum. Averaging 11.0 points and 4.6 assists per game while shooting just over 41 percent from the field and under 30 percent from three-point range, James has not dominated the level of competition typically expected from a second-year NBA player. These numbers raise legitimate concerns about his readiness to contribute at the highest level.

Given these circumstances, James’ long-term future with the Lakers appears uncertain. With LeBron James potentially nearing the end of his tenure in Los Angeles—or his NBA career altogether—the organization may have little incentive to retain Bronny beyond the current season, despite his modest guaranteed salary for next year. Redick’s recent coaching decisions indicate a preference for tighter rotations rather than player experimentation, which further limits James’ chances to prove himself. Even if opportunities were to arise, his struggles in the G League suggest a breakthrough may be unlikely in the short term.

As the season progresses, it appears increasingly possible that both Bronny and LeBron James may finish the year in Los Angeles before moving on. If that occurs, their departures could come together, marking the end of a brief and closely scrutinized chapter for Bronny James with the Lakers.
