The Oklahoma City Thunder secured a narrow 103 to 100 victory over the New York Knicks on Wednesday night as Chet Holmgren and Shai Gilgeous Alexander delivered late game execution to close out a tense matchup at Madison Square Garden.
Holmgren finished with 28 points and eight rebounds while tying a career high with six three point field goals, providing critical scoring stretches that helped Oklahoma City maintain control late in the fourth quarter. Gilgeous Alexander added 26 points and continued his consistent scoring run for the defending National Basketball Associationchampions, who extended their winning streak to four games.
The Thunder received additional support from Luguentz Dort, who scored 16 points and provided perimeter defense during key possessions. Oklahoma City regained the lead early in the fourth quarter and protected a slim margin throughout the final minutes.
The Knicks mounted a strong third quarter push. After trailing by 15 points midway through the period, New York produced a 24 to 9 scoring run led by Jalen Brunson. Brunson capped the surge with a three point shot that bounced in to tie the game. Moments later, Mikal Bridges converted a late three pointer to give New York an 80 to 77 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Holmgren opened the game aggressively, scoring 14 first quarter points while shooting five for seven from the field. His four early three point makes forced New York to adjust its defensive coverage on the perimeter.
Despite the rally, the Knicks struggled with shooting efficiency late in the game. Brunson recorded 16 points and a season high 15 assists but shot five for 18 from the field. OG Anunoby also scored 16 points but missed a potential game tying three point attempt in the final seconds. Brunson’s final attempt from beyond the arc also missed as time expired.
Karl Anthony Towns delivered one of the most complete performances for New York with 17 points and 17 rebounds, anchoring the Knicks inside during their second half comeback.
The game also featured an early moment of tension when Knicks head coach Mike Brown received a technical foul in the first quarter after arguing that Gilgeous Alexander should have been called for a third personal foul following contact with Brunson.
The result carries early season implications for both teams. Oklahoma City continues to reinforce its position among the top contenders in the Western Conference with balanced scoring and improved late game execution.
For New York, the loss ends a three game winning streak and highlights the importance of perimeter efficiency in close contests against elite opponents.
Looking ahead, Oklahoma City will host the Golden State Warriors on Saturday. The Knicks begin a five game road trip Friday against the Denver Nuggets.
