Denver Summit FC Stun Defending Champions Gotham FC 2–0 for First-Ever Club Win.

Denver Summit FC etched their name into the record books with a statement-making 2–0 victory over reigning champions Gotham FC, earning the first win in club history and delivering one of the most eye-catching results of the NWSL season so far. From the opening whistle, the expansion side showed no signs of hesitation against elite opposition. Denver set an aggressive tone with a coordinated high press that consistently disrupted Gotham’s build-out, forcing turnovers and limiting the champions’ ability to establish rhythm in midfield.

Gotham, led by goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, weathered an early storm as Denver created several dangerous chances. Yuna McCormack and Melissa Kössler both tested Berger in the first half, but the German international stood firm to keep the match level. At the other end, Denver’s back line—organized and physical throughout—contained Gotham’s attacking threats, including Sarah Schupansky and Katie Lampson, to send the match into halftime at 0–0. The breakthrough arrived shortly after the restart in the 58th minute. McCormack delivered a precise assist into the attacking area, where Kössler finished clinically to give Denver a historic lead and register the first goal conceded by Gotham this season. The strike also added another milestone for Kössler, who became only the second player in NWSL history to score in each of a club’s first three regular-season matches. Seeking a response, Gotham turned to their bench and introduced attacking reinforcements including Esther González and Midge Purce. However, the momentum shift never fully materialized as Denver continued to match intensity with organization and relentless pressing.

In the 73rd minute, Denver doubled their advantage following a costly error from Berger. Tash Flint capitalized quickly, dispossessing the goalkeeper and calmly finishing to record her first NWSL goal and effectively put the match out of reach. From there, Denver managed the closing stages with composure, rotating personnel to preserve energy and protect the result. Despite nine minutes of stoppage time and late pressure from the visitors, the Summit defense—anchored by goalkeeper Abby Smith—held firm to secure a clean sheet and a landmark victory. When the final whistle sounded, Denver Summit FC walked away with a 2–0 win that not only stunned the defending champions but also marked a defining moment in the club’s early history.
