DENVER — The inaugural home opener for Denver Summit FC ended in a scoreless draw against the Washington Spirit in front of a record-setting crowd at Empower Field at Mile High. The match concluded 0–0, but the evening was defined as much by its historic attendance as by the result on the pitch. An official 63,004 fans packed the stadium, setting a new National Women’s Soccer League single-match attendance record and surpassing the previous mark of 40,091 set in 2025. From the opening whistle, Denver Summit FC showed composure beyond expectations for an expansion side, matching one of the league’s top teams in intensity and organization. Yazmeen Ryan set the tone in midfield with relentless pressing that repeatedly disrupted Washington’s buildup play. Denver’s defensive structure, anchored by captain Janine Sonis, effectively limited the attacking influence of Trinity Rodman and forced the Spirit into wide, less dangerous areas. Goalkeeper Abby Smith was steady behind a disciplined back line, while Washington’s Sandy MacIver handled periods of Denver pressure to preserve the clean sheet on the other end. Denver created its best attacking moments through transition, with Melissa Kössler and Tash Flint combining for several dangerous breaks. However, Washington’s defense held firm through added time in the first half. The second half followed a similar pattern, with both sides maintaining high work rates but struggling to generate clear finishing chances. Washington made early and late substitutions in an attempt to change the tempo, including introducing Rosemonde Kouassi and later Gift Monday in place of Trinity Rodman.
Denver responded with its own adjustments to maintain energy at altitude, rotating in Natalie Means, Ally Brazier, and Olivia Thomas during the closing stages. Despite fresh legs on both sides, neither team was able to find a breakthrough. When the final whistle sounded, the match ended as a 0–0 draw. For Washington, it was a hard-earned point on the road. For Denver Summit FC, it was a statement of competitiveness in their first home appearance, achieved in front of a record-breaking crowd and against one of the league’s strongest opponents.
