Donovan Mitchell’s Redemption Mission: Leading the Cavaliers Through the Playoffs

Donovan Mitchell has emerged as the emotional and tactical leader of the Cleveland Cavaliers as they enter the 2025 Eastern Conference Semifinals. Despite the Cavaliers securing the top seed in the East and finishing with the NBA’s second-best record, Mitchell remains grounded and focused on one objective: winning an NBA championship. This mindset is driven not by current success but by past pain — most notably the Utah Jazz’s playoff collapse in 2021, a memory Mitchell still uses as motivation. In the 2021 postseason, Mitchell's Jazz held the top seed in the Western Conference and a 2-0 series lead over the Los Angeles Clippers. However, Utah lost four straight games, including a historic collapse in Game 6, when the team squandered a 24-point lead against a Clippers squad playing without Kawhi Leonard. Mitchell, despite playing through an injured ankle, scored 39 points and came close to a triple-double. The experience shaped him, and he carries those lessons into his leadership with Cleveland.

Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson, who was an assistant with the Clippers during that 2021 series, attests to the impact that experience has had on Mitchell’s poise and perspective. “Because he has that experience, he’s going to be more aggressive in communicating with me and his teammates,” Atkinson said. Mitchell’s presence has helped keep the Cavaliers focused through a record-breaking season, where they won 60 games for the first time since the LeBron James era. Mitchell sees a different mentality in this Cavaliers group compared to his former Jazz teammates. “It’s not just what I’ve been preaching,” he noted, “I think guys feel it… we all know there’s a level of desperation among this group”. That urgency has translated into playoff intensity. Cleveland swept the Miami Heat in the first round, with Mitchell scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter of Game 2 to shift the momentum decisively in the Cavs’ favor.

As the Cavaliers prepare to face the Indiana Pacers, who won three out of four regular-season matchups, Mitchell’s leadership becomes even more crucial. He enters the series with a playoff scoring average of 27.8 points, seventh-highest among players with at least 50 postseason games. He has also tied Michael Jordan’s record for most consecutive series openers with 30 or more points — seven in total. Indiana head coach Rick Carlisle understands the threat Mitchell poses. “He can determine a series,” Carlisle said, referencing Mitchell’s Game 2 heroics against Miami. With experience, drive, and the support of a talented roster, Donovan Mitchell is poised not just to overcome the ghosts of 2021 but to lead the Cavaliers on a deep playoff run.
