The San Francisco 49ers have granted running back Christian McCaffrey a new contract this offseason, highlighting his significant value in Kyle Shanahan's offensive system. The team is optimistic about achieving comparable results from the reigning Offensive Player of the Year while reducing the strain on him.
Shanahan mentioned a month ago his desire to distribute carries more evenly compared to the previous season, aiming to safeguard CMC from minor injuries that could potentially escalate into more serious ones.
"We have guys that can run the ball," Shanahan said during offseason workouts, via The Athletic. "We have to protect Christian from himself. He doesn't like to ever come out no matter what the situation is and I do think that's something we could protect him with more. When you are such a threat in the pass game, it's a little bit different. ... But if he's just taking the wear and tear with 20 carries and stuff every game -- and he's definitely good enough to do that and he has proved he can stay healthy -- but you'd like to take some of that off of him and give it to other guys also."
Throughout his career, Christian McCaffrey has demonstrated an impressive ability to accumulate touches while maintaining a high level of production. However, as he advances in age, it would be wise for Shanahan to exercise a bit more caution with the 28-year-old running back, who has amassed 1,806 touches over his career. Last season, Elijah Mitchell recorded 75 carries in 11 games, while Jordan Mason had 40. The potential to reduce McCaffrey's workload may hinge on Mitchell's ability to stay healthy in 2024. Additionally, fourth-round rookie Isaac Guerendo could potentially earn more opportunities with a strong showing in training camp and the preseason.
Ultimately, Shanahan may find it challenging to remove his top weapon from the field except during blowout games. However, the remarks made this offseason suggest a deliberate intention to be more strategic in utilizing the star running back in 2024.
