LeBron James Likely to Stay with Lakers Beyond 2025 Despite Offseason Speculation

Despite a summer filled with speculation, cryptic Instagram posts, and trade rumors, league insiders believe LeBron James isn’t going anywhere — at least not yet.

According to an offseason survey conducted by ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, a majority of league insiders still expect LeBron to remain in Los Angeles beyond this season. While his current deal with the Lakers will expire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, most around the league view the Lakers as the frontrunner to retain the future Hall of Famer.

James, 40, is entering his 23rd NBA season and eighth in the purple and gold — the longest stretch he’s spent with any franchise. While he opted into the final year of his deal earlier this summer, he did not push for an extension, and the Lakers didn’t offer one either. That has led to understandable questions: Is this his last season in L.A.? Or just the latest chapter in a career that’s often unfolded on his own terms?

One Eastern Conference scout summed up the league-wide feeling:

“If I was taking the Lakers or the field, I’d take the field. But I’ll take the Lakers over any specific team, especially given they are the one with a clear path to pay him.”

Financially, the Lakers are well-positioned to make another run with LeBron in 2026 and beyond. With only Luka Dončić, Jarred Vanderbilt, Bronny James, Dalton Knecht, and Adou Thiero under guaranteed contracts for the 2026-27 season, Los Angeles has the cap flexibility to bring James back — and potentially retool the roster around him.

From a personal standpoint, the fit still makes sense. LeBron has become the undisputed leader of the Lakers’ locker room. His son Bronny James is now part of the team, and new head coach JJ Redick — LeBron’s former podcast co-host — brings a familiar voice to the sideline. All signs point to continuity. Of course, it wouldn’t be a LeBron offseason without drama. Whether it was Rich Paul’s revelation that four teams had reached out about a potential trade or the online frenzy surrounding a Clippers logo on James’ Instagram post, fans and media alike spent the summer dissecting every move. But in the end, none of it moved the needle — LeBron is staying put, for now.

If the Lakers can build on last season’s 52-win campaign and make a deeper playoff run, it only strengthens the case for James to finish his career in Los Angeles. But with LeBron, speculation never ends. He may not say much, but his actions — opting in, showing up to training camp focused, mentoring Bronny — speak volumes.

Until he says otherwise, expect No. 6 to keep suiting up for the Lakers.
