The New York Liberty secured its core lineup by signing Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu to multiyear contracts. All three players were instrumental in the team’s 2024 championship run and have committed to remaining with the franchise beyond a single season. Stewart revealed on her podcast that she agreed to a three-year maximum contract valued at approximately $1.19 million for the current season, accounting for 17% of the salary cap annually. Sources indicated that Ionescu signed a similar deal, while Jones also committed to a three-year contract at a slightly lower salary. Stewart emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong roster, noting that financial sacrifices among players can help sustain a competitive team. Each player expressed a shared commitment to the organization and the city, highlighting both personal and professional reasons for staying in New York long term. The trio has demonstrated exceptional on-court chemistry. Since 2023, when all three players have started together, the Liberty have achieved a 70–16 record and a +16.8 net rating, underscoring their effectiveness as a unit.
General manager Jonathan Kolb described the signings as a defining moment for the franchise, emphasizing the players’ collective investment in the team’s future and legacy. Their decision stands out in a season where many WNBA players opted for shorter contracts due to recent collective bargaining developments. In addition, the Liberty re-signed Betnijah Laney-Hamilton to a one-year deal reportedly worth $400,000, further strengthening the roster heading into the upcoming season. Overall, the long-term commitments from Stewart, Jones, and Ionescu signal stability and championship aspirations for the Liberty as they aim to build on their recent success.
