BOSTON — Connor McDavid scored a short-handed goal and assisted on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ power-play tally to help the Edmonton Oilers defeat the Boston Bruins 3-1 on Thursday night. Quinn Hutson, a former Boston University player, recorded his first NHL goal as Edmonton earned its sixth win in eight games. Oilers goaltender Tristan Jarry exited the game with an apparent injury with 3:52 left in the second period after sliding to make a save. He had stopped 12 of 13 shots, while Calvin Pickard made 12 saves in relief.
For Boston, Pavel Zacha scored on the power play, snapping a five-game winning streak. Jeremy Swayman made 22 saves in the loss. Hutson scored off a rebound from Max Jones’ shot late in the second period, giving Edmonton a 2-1 lead after Swayman made the initial stop but could not control the puck. McDavid later completed the scoring on a breakaway early in the third period, using a backhand to tuck the puck past Swayman.
The Oilers, ranked first in the NHL for power-play efficiency, capitalized on their opening opportunity when McDavid set up Nugent-Hopkins from behind the net, leading to a one-timer goal in the first period. Edmonton is set to conclude a five-game road trip against Minnesota on Saturday, while Boston will host Vancouver that night.
