As the preseason draws to a close, several teams faced the unsettling reality of a worst-case scenario for many players: sustaining injuries just prior to the final roster decisions. While some players encountered this unfortunate fate, others managed to escape with only minor injuries.
One such player who faced a dire situation this weekend was Texans safety Brandon Hill. During Houston’s last preseason matchup against the Rams, Hill sustained a serious knee injury, as reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. This injury will effectively terminate Hill’s 2024 season before it has the opportunity to commence.
Selected in the seventh round from Pittsburgh last year, Hill participated in only two games. Given that much of the previous year's roster is returning for 2024, his playing time was expected to be limited. However, his injury diminishes the team's depth at the safety position and eliminates his prospects of making the 53-man roster.
Below are several additional injury updates from various teams within the NFL :
According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Giants defensive tackle Timmy Horne is expected to miss the entirety of the 2024 season. The third-year player from Kansas State has sustained a tear to his Achilles tendon, which will sideline him for the year. Horne joined the New York team late last season after spending the majority of his initial two years in the league with the Falcons. He started five games as an undrafted rookie in 2022 but has primarily served as a depth player since then.
The Steelers are currently facing several injuries along their offensive line. Following rookie first-round tackle Troy Fautanu's MCL sprain two weeks ago and center Nate Herbig's torn rotator cuff, the latest setback involves key reserve lineman Dylan Cook, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Pittsburgh acquired Cook after he was released by the Buccaneers last offseason. Although he made the final 53-man roster in 2023, he has yet to see game action. Due to a recent foot injury, it appears that Cook will need to wait several additional weeks before making his NFL and Steelers debut.
In another update, Commanders middle linebacker Jordan Magee has managed to avoid a severe injury but is still expected to be sidelined for a significant period. John Keim of ESPN reports that the fifth-round rookie from Temple has sustained an MCL injury that necessitated a "procedure." It has been confirmed that this injury is not season-ending, and he is expected to return at some point during the season. While Washington has some depth at linebacker, Magee was the only player listed behind veteran Bobby Wagner in the Mike role.
Finally, an update has emerged regarding the MRI results for 49ers pass rushers Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported late Friday that both players had sustained knee sprains without any ACL damage, although MRIs were scheduled for confirmation. The Athletic's Matt Barrows provided an update today, indicating that following the MRIs conducted yesterday, Floyd has been classified as day-to-day, while Gross-Matos will also be evaluated further.
