The Green Bay Packers held a competition for the kicker position during the offseason, featuring Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph. In the end, the team opted for neither candidate, instead signing rookie Brayden Narveson. Carlson, who faced challenges in his rookie season, and Joseph were unable to demonstrate their viability to the team's management. Carlson was released during the 53-man roster cuts, while Joseph was let go the following day after the Packers acquired Narveson off waivers.
Following the tumultuous experience with Carlson last year, it is somewhat unexpected that the Packers have placed their trust in an undrafted rookie. Coach Matt LaFleur expressed his belief that the newcomer will successfully execute his kicks. "Indeed, I have observed enough to feel confident in him," LaFleur stated on Sunday regarding Narveson. "So, to answer your question: Do I have confidence in him? Absolutely, I do. I am aware that Rich (Bisaccia), Byron (Storer), and Kyle (Wilber), along with our scouting department, held a favorable opinion of him during his college career. He was among a select group of individuals they were eager to work with. When he became available, it was clear that we acted promptly to acquire him."
LaFleur consistently supported Carlson throughout the previous season, remaining loyal to the rookie despite his challenges. However, during the offseason, the Packers sought to enhance competition for the young kicker by bringing in Joseph and several other candidates. At this juncture, it remains uncertain how Narveson will perform in actual games, particularly during the December matchups in Green Bay. Nevertheless, the NC State alum demonstrated impressive kicking ability during the preseason in Tennessee, successfully converting 6 of 7 field goal attempts, which included a 59-yard kick and a game-winning field goal. Narveson expressed his expectation to return to the Titans' practice squad but is excited about the opportunity in Green Bay. "I prepared, I got opportunities in the games, I executed in the games," he stated. "That gave me the chance to come here, and I'm ecstatic. I'm excited to be here and I'm going to continue to get better, because I don't want to stop here and I don't feel like I've arrived." The rookie will have the opportunity to showcase his powerful kicking skills from Brazil as the Packers commence the 2024 season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night in São Paulo.
