Shakira Austin’s future with the Washington Mystics remains uncertain as she enters the upcoming WNBA offseason. After completing her four-year rookie contract, Austin is expected to become a restricted free agent. This status gives the Mystics the option to match offers from other teams, but it also means Austin could explore opportunities elsewhere depending on her career priorities. Austin was selected third overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft and quickly established herself as a talented young post player. Although her ability has rarely been questioned, injuries throughout the early years of her career limited her development and affected both her performance and confidence. Despite these setbacks, Austin demonstrated significant progress during the 2025 season. For the first time since her rookie year, she played in more than 19 games, appearing in 38 of Washington’s 44 contests. She averaged a career-high 12.7 points per game while continuing to provide strong interior defense. This season helped reaffirm her potential as a key contributor at the professional level. Even with this positive momentum, speculation about Austin’s long-term role in Washington continues. She has expressed support for the Mystics’ new coaching staff, and the organization has spoken positively about her development. At the same time, the team’s evolving roster could affect how she fits into the franchise’s future plans. One factor that could influence Austin’s decision is her role within the team’s frontcourt rotation. Rookie forward Kiki Iriafen recently completed an impressive All-Star season and, along with Sonia Citron, has emerged as a foundational player for Washington. Because both Iriafen and Austin operate primarily as interior players, there may be overlap in their playing styles. Some analysts suggest that sharing minutes between two non-shooting post players can create roster construction challenges in the WNBA.

Austin has shown flashes of versatility that could help address this issue. Unlike Iriafen, she has demonstrated the ability to handle the ball effectively for her size and has begun developing a perimeter jumper. The Mystics experimented with a similar positional adjustment when they shifted Emily Engstler from an undersized post player to a larger wing role. However, Engstler’s transition was easier to manage because she played fewer minutes than Austin. Another complication is Washington’s draft capital. The Mystics hold three first-round selections in the 2026 WNBA Draft, meaning the team could add additional frontcourt talent. If Austin believes her highest potential lies in becoming a dominant, high-usage post player, Washington might not provide the ideal environment for that role, especially with Iriafen already established as the team’s primary big. Despite these uncertainties, there are also strong reasons for Austin to remain with the Mystics. She finished last season as the team’s third-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder, proving her value within the rotation. Beyond statistics, Austin has also become an emotional leader for the team. After the midseason trade of Brittany Sykes in 2025, Austin’s leadership role became even more significant. Her competitive energy and passion on the court have made her a fan favorite at CareFirst Arena. Additionally, Austin continues to expand her game through offseason competition. She has played in the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league and recently helped Team USA win a gold medal at the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup. Although 3x3 basketball differs from the traditional WNBA format, these experiences have allowed her to showcase ball-handling and perimeter skills that could translate into a more versatile role.

Throughout her career, Austin has consistently demonstrated resilience. Injuries have interrupted her progress multiple times, yet she has repeatedly worked to regain her form and continue improving. Because of that perseverance, many observers believe she deserves the opportunity to see her development continue with the organization that drafted her. Ultimately, the decision about Austin’s future will depend on both the player and the franchise. As a restricted free agent, she has the option to evaluate other opportunities while the Mystics retain the ability to keep her if they believe she remains an essential part of their rebuilding roster. Regardless of the outcome, Austin’s next contract will likely shape the next phase of her WNBA career.
