Klay Thompson scored 23 points, all in the first half, including the 17,000th point of his career, as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Utah Jazz 138-120 on Saturday night, completing a two-game sweep. Six Mavericks players reached double figures in scoring during the victory. Dallas and Utah faced each other three times in just 10 days. Utah won at home on January 8, 114-112, but the Mavericks responded with a 144-122 victory on Thursday before Saturday’s win. The Mavericks were without rookie Cooper Flagg, who missed his second straight game due to a left ankle sprain, marking the first injury-related absence of his season. Dallas also played without Anthony Davis (finger), Kyrie Irving (knee), and P.J. Washington, who was out for personal reasons. Despite these absences, the rest of the Mavericks lineup proved sufficient to secure the win. Thompson, coming off the bench, reached the 17,000-point milestone with a pair of three-pointers followed by a turnaround jumper in the lane just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. He finished 7-for-12 overall and 6-for-11 from three-point range, leading Dallas in scoring for the second consecutive game in Flagg’s absence, after posting a season-high 26 points in Thursday’s win. Brandon Williams and Max Christie each added 22 points, Naji Marshall contributed 16, Jaden Hardy scored 12, and Dwight Powell finished with 10 points for the Mavericks, who had won only two of their previous five games.
For Utah, Keyonte George led all scorers with 29 points, Brice Sensabaugh added 25, and Ace Bailey contributed 18. Kyle Filipowski recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Cody Williams scored 11. The Jazz fell behind 42-29 after the first quarter and could not recover. Lauri Markkanen, Utah’s leading scorer at 27.9 points per game, missed a third consecutive game due to illness, and Walker Kessler remained sidelined with a shoulder injury. Looking ahead, the Jazz will visit the San Antonio Spurs on Monday to conclude a five-game road trip, while the Mavericks travel to face the New York Knicks the same day.
