The Minnesota Timberwolves responded with authority in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals, defeating the Golden State Warriors 117-93 in Minneapolis. The win allowed Minnesota to tie the series at one game apiece and reassert themselves after a disappointing Game 1 loss. The Timberwolves opened with a commanding 13-0 run and never relinquished the lead in a wire-to-wire victory. Anthony Edwards overcame a first-half ankle sprain to deliver 20 points and nine rebounds. His resilience and ability to contribute after injury proved vital for Minnesota. However, it was Julius Randle who led the team statistically, posting 24 points and 11 assists. According to ESPN Research, Randle became the first Timberwolves player since Kevin Garnett in 2004 to record at least 20 points and 10 assists in a playoff game. Additionally, Edwards and Randle joined elite company as just the third Timberwolves duo to each post at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in a postseason game.
The Warriors, meanwhile, struggled without star guard Stephen Curry, who is sidelined with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and is expected to miss at least a week. Golden State deployed a deep rotation, using 14 players in an attempt to make up for Curry’s absence. Jonathan Kuminga led the Warriors with 18 points off the bench, while Jimmy Butler III added 17 points and 7 rebounds. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr acknowledged the challenge of playing without Curry and noted the importance of adapting quickly. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch, meanwhile, called for the NBA to review what he described as “shots at” Rudy Gobert taken by Golden State players, adding further intrigue to the budding rivalry. Game 3 will shift to San Francisco and take place on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC. With the series tied, both teams will look to seize momentum in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive series.
