Denver Summit FC started strongly in front of their home supporters, controlling possession early and establishing momentum. Their breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Melissa Kössler finished a flowing attacking move set up by Yazmeen Ryan. The hosts doubled their lead in the 32nd minute, with Natasha Flint scoring from a well-placed assist by Kössler to make it 2–0. San Diego Wave FC responded after halftime with increased intensity and possession. In the 49th minute, Lia Godfrey scored to cut the deficit to 2–1.
