SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama delivered a dominant performance Saturday night, scoring 39 points and grabbing nine rebounds to help the San Antonio Spurs withstand a season-high 55 points from Anthony Edwards in a 126–123 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Wembanyama secured a pivotal offensive rebound in the closing seconds and came up with several key plays down the stretch. After Donte DiVincenzo buried a 24-foot three-pointer to give Minnesota a 119–118 lead with just over a minute remaining, Wembanyama answered with a midrange jumper. He then protected the Spurs’ slim advantage by blocking Joan Beringer’s reverse layup attempt with 13 seconds left. De’Aaron Fox contributed 25 points and 12 assists as San Antonio avoided being swept in the three-game season series. Keldon Johnson added 20 points for the Spurs. Edwards was electric in the fourth quarter, pouring in 26 points while shooting 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. His late scoring surge nearly mirrored Minnesota’s comeback win over San Antonio on Jan. 11, when Edwards hit a game-winning three in the final seconds after the Spurs squandered a 19-point fourth-quarter lead. San Antonio established control early by producing a historic second quarter. The Spurs shot 57 percent from the field and outscored the Timberwolves 48–22, marking their highest-scoring quarter since 1987 and the fourth-highest in franchise history.
Wembanyama was especially effective in the first half, scoring 23 points and hitting three of his five three-point attempts, tying his season high for points in a half. Minnesota responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring San Antonio 40–27 and opening the fourth period with a 9–2 run. Edwards capped the surge with a corner three, celebrating emphatically in front of a sellout crowd. Although Wembanyama went scoreless for much of the third quarter, he closed the period with a powerful driving dunk to steady the Spurs. The Timberwolves will travel to Utah to face the Jazz on Tuesday night, while San Antonio returns home to host Utah on Monday.
