Alex Ovechkin “Pretty Sure” He Will Return for 22nd NHL Season.

Alex Ovechkin has indicated that he is leaning toward continuing his career, stating he is “pretty sure” that his team’s season finale will not be his final game in the NHL. The Washington Capitals captain made the comments as he weighs retirement following his 21st season in the league. Speaking after Washington’s final game, the 40-year-old emphasized that his decision will ultimately depend on discussions with his family and the organization. Ovechkin noted that his children have already expressed a desire for him to return, highlighting their strong connection to the team and the city. Although he has not yet spoken with general manager Chris Patrick, Ovechkin joked that an ideal conversation would involve the team offering him a multi-year contract extension. The veteran forward is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 but suggested he is unlikely to play for another NHL franchise if he does not remain in Washington. Ovechkin remains one of the league’s most productive players despite his age. He completed the season with 32 goals and 32 assists while appearing in all 82 games. His career total now stands at 929 goals in 1,573 games, surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history. While considering his future, Ovechkin acknowledged the physical challenges of maintaining elite performance at 40 years old, especially after dealing with a preseason hamstring injury that impacted his early-season production. He added that his decision will also depend on Washington’s ability to compete for a playoff spot and contend for the Stanley Cup.

If he chooses not to return to the NHL, Ovechkin did not rule out continuing his career overseas, including a possible return to Russia’s KHL, where he previously played for Dynamo Moscow. The uncertainty surrounding his future created emotional moments late in the season. During Washington’s home finale against the Pittsburgh Penguins, fans honored Ovechkin with chants of “one more year,” celebrating both his career and long-standing rivalry with Sidney Crosby. For now, the Capitals and their fans await a final decision from one of hockey’s greatest players, whose legacy continues to grow regardless of what comes next.
