Buffalo Sabres Extend 10 Game Winning Streak With 4-1 Road Win Over Dallas Stars

Angela Piazza/ The Dallas Morning News

A breaking update Wednesday night saw the Buffalo Sabres continue the latest surge in the NHL, extending their winning streak to 10-games with a 4-1 victory over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center.

Tage Thompson delivered the defining sequence of the night, scoring twice in a 2-1/2-minute span midway through the third period and adding an assist as Buffalo pulled away from one of the league’s top teams. The result matched the Sabres franchise record for consecutive wins and tied the longest streak by any NHL team this season, a mark previously set by Colorado in November.

Buffalo continued to show consistency throughout the timeline of the streak, controlling games late and avoiding deficits after two periods. The Sabres have now gone 10 straight games without trailing after 40 minutes, leading eight times and tied twice during the run. Their road success also reached a season best seven-game winning streak, the longest in the league.

Josh Doan and defenseman Bowen Byram each recorded a goal and an assist, providing secondary scoring that has become a key factor in Buffalo’s outlook. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 28 shots in his third start during the streak, allowing just one goal in each of his appearances. His steady play has stabilized the crease as the Sabres navigate a demanding stretch of games.

Dallas struck early when Mavrik Bourque scored on a rebound just 15-seconds into the opening shift. It marked his sixth goal of the season, with two coming over his past four games. The Stars entered the night second in the overall NHL standings and riding a six-game point streak at 4-0-2 before it was snapped.

Bowen Byram tied the game late in the second period with 2:55 remaining, swinging momentum back to Buffalo. Thompson then took over in the third, scoring at 9:21 to give the Sabres a two-goal cushion before adding his team leading 20th goal with 8:25 left to seal the outcome.

Casey DeSmith made 27 saves for Dallas and suffered his first regulation loss since his season debut on Oct. 16. The loss ended a franchise record 13 game point streak at 9-0-4, underscoring how difficult Buffalo has been to beat during this stretch.

The impact of the win extends beyond the standings. Buffalo continues to push forward without goaltender Alex Lyon, who returned to Buffalo for further evaluation after sustaining a lower body injury late in Monday’s win at St. Louis. Lyon has earned seven wins during the streak, and his status remains a key storyline as the Sabres assess next steps.

Doan’s goal also ended an eight-game scoreless stretch, adding another positive development to a lineup that has received contributions throughout the roster. What this means moving forward is a Sabres team building confidence, tightening defensively, and proving capable of closing games against elite competition.

The outlook now turns to whether Buffalo can extend the streak further and maintain its structure as injuries and schedule intensity increase. The next steps will test whether this run represents a turning point in the season or a peak that must be sustained against continued league pressure.
