Cole Caufield Powers Canadiens to 4-2 Comeback Win Over Buffalo Sabres

BUFFALO -- A breaking update in the NHL saw Cole Caufield score twice in the third period to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-2 comeback victory over the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Saturday night.

Caufield’s goals, his 31st and 32nd of the season, erased a 2-1 deficit and secured Montreal’s third straight win, giving the Canadiens momentum as they continue a critical road stretch. Juraj Slafkovsky and Oliver Kapanen also contributed goals, while goaltender Jakub Dobes made 36 saves in a performance that emphasized Montreal’s resilience and opportunistic scoring in the final period.

Buffalo had opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Slafkovsky at 8:40 of the first period. The Sabres responded in the second, as Owen Power tied the game during a delayed penalty and Noah Ostlund gave Buffalo a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal with just over a minute remaining in the period. The Sabres’ five-game winning streak came to an end despite Alex Lyon stopping 27 shots.

Montreal regained control in the third period, with Caufield redirecting a Noah Dobson shot at 15:46 remaining to tie the game. He then put the Canadiens ahead with a second goal at 10:13. Kapanen sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 47 seconds left. The Canadiens’ ability to capitalize on key scoring chances and maintain defensive discipline was critical, especially against a Buffalo team that has struggled to maintain consistency on the road this season.

This latest timeline impact boosts Montreal in the standings, giving them confidence as they continue a three-game road trip. Buffalo, meanwhile, faces immediate pressure to rebound with upcoming back-to-back games.

The outlook for both teams is clear, the Canadiens will look to extend their winning streak against Minnesota on Monday, while the Sabres travel to Florida the same night seeking to regain momentum.
