Jake Guentzel scored with just 14 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a dramatic 4–3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night in Tampa. The goal capped a late comeback after defenseman Darren Raddysh forced overtime by scoring with only 26 seconds left in regulation. Guentzel finished a long stretch pass from Nikita Kucherov near the Sabres’ blue line, skating in alone before beating goaltender Colten Ellis with a low shot. The win extended Tampa Bay’s winning streak to four games. Kucherov led the Lightning offensively with a four-point performance, recording one goal and three assists. Oliver Bjorkstrand also scored for Tampa Bay, while Raddysh added a goal and an assist. Guentzel contributed earlier in the game as well, assisting on Kucherov’s first-period goal. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 23 shots in net. Buffalo received two goals from Mattias Samuelsson and another from Josh Doan, who appeared to secure the win with a power-play goal midway through the third period. The Sabres, who entered the game having won six of their previous eight contests, got 31 saves from Ellis but were unable to hold their late lead. After a scoreless second period, both teams scored twice in the third. Tampa Bay pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker in the closing moments and capitalized when Raddysh tied the game, sending it to overtime.
The Lightning entered the game short-handed, missing centers Anthony Cirelli and Brayden Point, as well as winger Nick Paul. Head coach Jon Cooper confirmed that Cirelli and Paul will also miss Tampa Bay’s upcoming matchup against Florida. Buffalo was also dealing with injuries, including goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who is expected to miss time.
Tampa Bay, which recently rallied from a four-goal deficit to defeat Boston in an outdoor Stadium Series game, will host Florida next. Buffalo returns home to face Pittsburgh on Thursday.
