WASHINGTON — Justin Sourdif scored his first NHL hat trick and added two assists to help the Washington Capitals secure a 7-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night.

Alex Ovechkin contributed two goals, Ryan Leonard recorded a goal and an assist, John Carlson also scored, and Connor McMichael added four assists for the Capitals, who ended a two-game losing streak. Goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 41 saves in the win. For the Ducks, Chris Kreider, Alex Killorn, Jacob Trouba, and Beckett Sennecke scored, while Petr Mrazek stopped 19 of 24 shots over two periods. Mrazek was replaced by Lukas Dostal at the start of the third period, and Dostal stopped all three shots he faced. The Ducks extended their losing streak to six games. Kreider opened the scoring just 6:33 into the first period, snapping a 15-game goal drought. Sourdif tied the game with a slot shot from a drop pass by McMichael and then scored again three minutes later, beating Mrazek glove side to give Washington a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. Sourdif later assisted on a goal by Leonard, who banked a shot off Mrazek to make it 3-1, and 1:36 later, Leonard returned the favor with a setup for Sourdif’s third goal. Ovechkin then ended a four-game goal drought with a wrister from the left circle.

Sourdif became the ninth rookie in Capitals history to record a hat trick and the first since Ovechkin achieved the feat on Jan. 13, 2006, at Anaheim. Despite a strong third-period push, outshooting Washington 17-5, the Ducks could not overcome the deficit. The Capitals were without Tom Wilson, who was named to Canada’s Olympic roster, and Aliaksei Protas, both listed as day-to-day.

The Ducks continue their four-game road trip in Philadelphia on Tuesday, while the Capitals will host Dallas on Wednesday.
