MONTREAL — Oliver Kapanen scored his 20th goal of the season as the Montreal Canadiens secured a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night, handing Toronto its eighth consecutive loss. Phillip Danault also scored for Montreal, and Jake Evans added an empty-net goal. Goaltender Jakub Dobes stopped 17 shots to earn the win.
For Toronto, William Nylander scored the team’s lone goal, while Joseph Woll made 30 saves in a solid effort between the pipes. The Maple Leafs remain in a playoff drought, entering the night 11 points outside the postseason and 13 points behind the Canadiens, who currently hold the second wild-card position in the Eastern Conference. Cole Caufield, Montreal’s leading scorer, was sidelined from late in the second period through the end of the game, appearing to be in discomfort. Trainers checked in periodically, and the team later confirmed that Caufield was sick. Toronto captain Auston Matthews extended his goalless streak to 12 games. The Canadiens will visit the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, while the Maple Leafs are set to host the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday
