St. Paul, Minn. — In a breaking update Tuesday night, Kirill Kaprizov scored the decisive shootout goal as the Minnesota Wild overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3, marking Minnesota’s 17th win in 18 games against Chicago.
Kaprizov, Minnesota’s second shooter in the shootout, fired a wrist shot past Spencer Knight to seal the victory. Goalie Jesper Wallstedt stopped all three of Chicago’s attempts, finishing with 29 saves on 32 shots.
Yakov Trenin, Joel Eriksson Ek, and Jared Spurgeon contributed goals in regulation for the Wild. Spurgeon’s game-tying goal at 2:01 of the third period came after Minnesota successfully killed its fourth Blackhawks power play, highlighting the team’s strong penalty-killing unit. Quinn Hughes played a key role in the buildup, deflecting the puck off Marcus Johansson’s skate to Eriksson Ek for the goal.
Chicago’s offense was led by Teuvo Teravainen, Ryan Donato, and Ilya Mikheyev, who scored three unanswered goals to open a 3-0 lead. Mikheyev’s goal came nearly six minutes into the second period, putting Chicago in a commanding position before Minnesota staged its comeback. Knight stopped 20 shots but was unable to keep the Blackhawks ahead in overtime or the shootout.
Minnesota’s win demonstrates the team’s resilience and continues their dominance in head-to-head matchups against Chicago. The Wild killed all four of Chicago’s power plays in regulation and another in overtime, underscoring the importance of special teams in close games.
Looking ahead, the Blackhawks will visit Pittsburgh on Thursday in search of a bounce-back win, while the Wild host Calgary on Thursday, aiming to extend their winning streak and maintain their strong position in the Western Conference standings.
This victory also reinforces Kaprizov’s status as a clutch performer and highlights Wallstedt’s emergence as one of the league’s top goaltenders, particularly in high-pressure situations. The Wild’s comeback from a three-goal deficit signals both mental toughness and depth in scoring, crucial for the playoff push.
