Max Domi scored 3:08 into overtime, finishing a two-on-one with Auston Matthews, to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday at Canada Life Centre.
Domi, who also registered an assist, played a pivotal role alongside Matthews, who scored his 24th goal of the season. Oliver Ekman-Larsson added a goal and two assists, while Bobby McMann contributed his 15th goal of the season and Morgan Rielly recorded two assists for Toronto. Dennis Hildeby made 27 saves as the Maple Leafs (24-16-8) concluded a four-game road trip with a 2-1-1 record.
The Jets (19-22-6) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end despite goals from Alex Iafallo, Kyle Connor, and Nino Niederreiter. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 33 shots in front of a sellout crowd for Winnipeg.
Toronto overcame a 3-1 deficit early in the third period. Niederreiter’s goal ended a 21-game goal drought, giving Winnipeg a two-goal lead, but Ekman-Larsson scored 2 1/2 minutes later. McMann’s tip-in off Ekman-Larsson tied the game 3-3 at 15:33, setting the stage for Domi’s overtime winner.
The game featured a few near-misses, including Kyle Connor’s shot in the first period that hit the post and briefly triggered the goal light before Hildeby made the save on the rebound. Winnipeg also nearly scored on a late power play with Jonathan Toews’ shot striking the crossbar.
Toronto has earned at least one point in 12 of its last 13 games. Matthews has six points, including three goals and three assists, in his last five contests. Domi played his 200th game with Toronto. William Nylander missed the game due to a lower-body injury.
Winnipeg has now lost its last four home games to Toronto, dating back to December 5, 2021. The Jets have scored the opening goal in nine consecutive games, setting a franchise record. Gabriel Vilardi extended his point streak to five games with two goals and five assists in that span.
Toronto will host the Minnesota Wild on Monday, while the Jets travel to face the Chicago Blackhawks on the same day. Both teams will look to adjust as the season approaches the midpoint, with playoff positioning still in flux for the Atlantic Division and Central Division rivals.
