The Colorado Avalanche secured a win in their series opener against the Dallas Stars during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, although the evening raised some concerns. After the 5-1 victory on the road, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar announced that forward Ross Colton had sustained a lower-body injury, but he expressed optimism that further information regarding Colton's condition would be available on Sunday, according to Meghan Angley of Guerilla Sports. In Game 1, Colton exited early in the third period and did not return, concluding the game with 7:04 of ice time, during which he recorded one shot and three hits. In his second season with the Avalanche, Colton finished the 2024-25 season with 16 goals and 13 assists, totaling 29 points, along with a minus-one rating and 18 penalty minutes over 61 games. Originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the fourth round of the 2016 NHL Draft, the 28-year-old from Robbinsville, N.J., has played 331 career games between the Lightning and Avalanche, amassing 80 goals and 72 assists for 152 points. During the 2023-24 season with the Avalanche, Colton achieved a career-high of 40 points, including 17 goals and 23 assists in 80 games.

He has also accumulated 23 points in 64 playoff games, highlighted by four goals and two assists for six points in 23 games, contributing to a Stanley Cup championship with the Lightning in 2021. The Avalanche acquired Colton from the Lightning in the 2023 offseason in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. According to PuckPedia, Colton is currently in the second year of a four-year contract with an average annual value of $4 million.
