WASHINGTON — The Dallas Stars halted a six-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 4–1 victory over the Washington Capitals, powered by a shorthanded goal from Radek Faksa and a strong performance in net by Casey DeSmith. Faksa opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game while Dallas was killing a penalty, converting his own rebound after a shot on Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson. The Stars carried that momentum into the second period, when defenseman Thomas Harley set up Sam Steel for a close-range goal early in the frame. Wyatt Johnston extended the lead late in the third period, scoring his 24th goal of the season off a pass from Steel. Roope Hintz added an empty-net goal with under 20 seconds remaining to seal the win. DeSmith stopped 23 shots for Dallas, which earned its first win since Dec. 21 after being routed 6–3 by Carolina the night before. Thompson finished with 33 saves for Washington, allowing three goals on 36 shots. Alex Ovechkin accounted for the Capitals’ lone goal with 2:19 left in regulation, scoring his 915th career goal while Washington skated with an extra attacker. The goal marked Ovechkin’s 18th of the season at age 40, further extending his NHL career scoring record.
The Capitals were without injured forwards Tom Wilson and Aliaksei Protas and have now dropped six of their last nine games.
Dallas will continue its road schedule Saturday against San Jose, beginning a four-game Western Conference trip. Washington travels to Chicago to face the Blackhawks on Friday night.
