DALLAS — Tage Thompson scored two goals in a span of 2½ minutes during the third period and added an assist as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Dallas Stars 4-1 on Wednesday night, extending their winning streak to ten games. This streak ties the Sabres’ franchise record and is currently the longest in the NHL this season, a mark previously matched by Colorado in November. Josh Doan and defenseman Bowen Byram each recorded a goal and an assist for Buffalo. Goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 28 shots in his third consecutive start during the streak, allowing only one goal in each game.
Mavrik Bourque scored for Dallas, ending the Stars’ six-game point streak (4-0-2). Buffalo now leads the NHL in road victories with a seven-game winning streak away from home.
Byram’s goal with 2:55 remaining in the second period broke a 1-1 tie. Bourque opened the scoring for Dallas just 15 seconds into the game, scoring on a rebound. Two of Bourque’s six goals this season have come in the past four games. The Sabres have led or tied after two periods in all ten games of the streak, with Thompson giving Buffalo a two-goal lead at 9:21 of the third period and scoring again at 8:25 remaining, marking his team-high 20th goal of the season.
Casey DeSmith, who had been undefeated in regulation since his season opener on October 16, stopped 27 shots in a losing effort, ending a 13-game point streak (9-0-4). Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon, who earned seven wins during the streak, returned to Buffalo for evaluation following a lower-body injury sustained in Monday’s game against St. Louis.
Doan’s goal ended his eight-game goalless streak.
